LightSavers

september 2009

Welcome to LightSavers
,the e-newsletter for people interested in outdoor LED and adaptive lighting technologies. The Toronto Atmospheric Fund is exploring advanced outdoor lighting solutions through its Lightsavers Program.  Please feel free to forward this newsletter to others who may be interested in this information.

We are very grateful for support received for this program from Natural Resources Canada and the Ontario Power Authority’s Technology Fund in partnership with the CEATI Outdoor Lighting Working Group.

Updates

First Two LightSavers Pilots Installed!

The first two LightSavers pilot projects were installed in August 2009. At the University of Toronto’s Galbraith building, 70-watt high pressure sodium wallpacks were replaced with 38-watt LED fixtures manufactured by Relume / Lumecon and distributed by Inforesight Consumer Products. At the City of Mississauga’s municipal courthouse, 400-watt metal halide parking lot lights were replaced with 232-Watt LED luminaires manufactured by Ruud. Both projects will be monitored for a year to evaluate the performance and cost-effectiveness of the new LED products.

Two New Pilot Projects Planned!

LightSavers has grown to include two new pilot projects. Exhibition Place will be replacing 65 125-watt high pressure sodium lights along a pedestrian pathway with lower-wattage LED fixtures. The new fixtures will be fitted with adaptive lighting controls to reduce light levels when the path is not being used. Evergreen, as part of its redevelopment of the Don Valley Brick Works site, will install high-efficiency LED lights at the facility’s new parking lot. New Manager for LightSavers

Bryan PurcellBryan Purcell joined TAF in the spring of 2009 and is now managing the LightSavers program. Bryan brings organizational and outreach skills he developed at the University of Toronto’s Sustainability Office to his new role. You can reach Bryan at bpurcell@tafund.org or 416-393-6358.

Discovering LEDs

Network building

With assistance from TAF and others, the University of Toronto’s Institute of Optical Sciences has created a Solid State Lighting Network (SSLNet) to bring together academic researchers, industries, governmental agencies, graduate students in the field, and end-users. The central idea of SSLNet is the creation of a shared photometric laboratory facility for industrial and academic use. The SSLNet is also organizing a series of workshops supporting members of the local LED industrial sector and others in understanding trends in the technology, and is holding a student design competition focused on innovation in LED luminaire design. For more information on the SSLNet, or to request a membership, contact Dr. Venkataramanan at vvenkat@optics.utoronto.ca.

Events

Light Canada Expo and Conference

The Light Canada Expo and Conference, organized by IIDEX/NeoCon and the Illuminating Engineering Society, is bringing the latest in lighting design and technology to Toronto from September 23rd to 26th. The latest lighting products, including adaptive controls and LEDs, will be displayed in more than 5,000 square feet of exposition space. The conference will feature sessions on every aspect of lighting, including several sessions on the use of LEDs and adaptive controls.
